Seal Watching

In August and September, in this Special Area of Conservation, grey seals are evident closer to shore. The mothers haul out onto storm beaches to give birth to their young. Sheer cliffs give us plenty of depth to get very near to these stony coves and see the seal pups close up. Mother is always nearby, and bull seals are also lurking, waiting for the female to finish rearing her pup and mate again.

Grey seal pups are only suckled for three weeks, then they are on their own. The mother's milk is extremely rich and the seal pup develops very rapidly from a helpless newborn covered in white fur to a robust heavy weight, sleek and ready for life at sea.

Do not miss this remarkable opportunity! Take advantage of some fine weather, and head for Carrigaholt at the Mouth of the Shannon on the Loop Head Peninsula for Dolphin and Seal Watching Boat Trips. Phone or email us for sailing times.

“Last year we went dolphin watching with Dolphinwatch in Carrigaholt. This is a very professional operation and I was greatly impressed. There is great emphasis on safety, which is very reassuring. The employees were friendly, helpful and well-informed. The trip itself was excellent and great value for money. We also found the dolphins to be extremely friendly, courteous and helpful.”
